I'm autistic, and you need to STOP SEXUALISING AUTISTIC WOMEN. We need to have a serious conversation about something I've been seeing online, particularly when it comes to dating and relationships. Men saying they want a girlfriend who's "a little bit autistic" or "a bit ADHD". And I have a question for those men. Do you actually want to date an autistic woman, or do you just like the idea of one? Because there's a difference. A very big difference. You might find it cute when she's shy or socially awkward. You might love that she gets excited talking about something she's passionate about. You might think her routines, her forgetfulness or the way she sees the world are adorable. You might even find her innocence or difficulty understanding certain social situations attractive. But here's what I want to know. What happens when her autism stops being cute to you? What happens when she experiences sensory overload and doesn't want to be touched? What happens when a small change, like Aldi moving the cheese, becomes the final straw after an already overwhelming day? What happens when she's experiencing autistic burnout and struggles to get out of bed, look after herself or do the things she normally enjoys? What happens when she needs clear communication, reassurance, time alone or support that you hadn't considered? And what happens if she's also living with something like PMDD, a separate condition that can make certain days incredibly difficult? Are you still interested in her then? Because autism isn't a personality accessory. It's not a collection of cute little quirks for somebody else to enjoy. And it's certainly not something you get to pick and choose the convenient parts of. But there's something even more concerning about this conversation. The infantilisation of autistic women. The idea that an autistic woman might be more innocent, more trusting, less experienced or easier to influence. And the possibility that some people are deliberately attracted to those perceived vulnerabilities because they believe it will make someone easier to manipulate. That's not attraction. That's exploitation. Being autistic doesn't make a woman a child. It doesn't mean she lacks intelligence, independence or the ability to make her own decisions. And it certainly doesn't give anyone permission to take advantage of her. Now, I want to make something very clear. I'm an autistic man. I cannot speak for the experiences of autistic women, and I wouldn't pretend to. But I can recognise when someone's neurodivergence is being turned into a fantasy. And I can use my voice to challenge it. There's absolutely nothing wrong with being attracted to an autistic woman. There's nothing wrong with loving her personality, her interests or the things that make her who she is. The problem starts when you want the traits you find attractive but refuse to respect the needs that come with them. When you call her shyness adorable but dismiss her communication difficulties. When you love her passion but get annoyed when she talks about her interests. When you admire her differences but expect her to hide them whenever they become inconvenient. When you want her vulnerability but don't respect her boundaries. That's not accepting somebody for who they are. That's expecting them to become the version of themselves that suits you. And autistic women deserve so much better than that. They deserve relationships where their boundaries are respected, their needs are understood and their independence is valued. They deserve partners who see them as equals. Not projects. Not fantasies. Not fetishes. You cannot romanticize someone's neurodivergence while refusing to respect the reality of it. And to the autistic women reading this, I'd genuinely like to hear your experiences. Because I think it's important that we listen to the women this conversation is actually about. #Autism #autismawareness #womenshealth #actuallyautistic #WomenOfTikTok
