He knew where a conversation about his parents’ courtship might lead, so he walked into the bookshop without another word. Almost immediately—and to his complete surprise—he saw Hermione Granger standing with Potter and Weasley next to the latest edition of ‘Hogwarts: A History’. xxx When he had advised Severus to give up on his infatuation with Lily Evans, Lucius never suspected that he would one day face a similar problem himself. He never imagined he would have to deal with his own son becoming infatuated with a Muggleborn. His wife didn’t react positively to it, and his friend found it utterly horrifying. Yet, both concluded that the madness should be allowed to run its course—Narcissa believed it would end quickly, while Severus thought Potter would scare Draco away from Miss Granger. He planned to meet, on neutral ground, the three soon-to-be his family. He had no doubt that Draco would not give up on his feelings; in that regard, they were remarkably alike. Lucius had overheard—by accident, of course—a conversation between Weasley and Kingsley in the Ministry of Magic corridor, so he knew Arthur was expecting to meet the Grangers today. That was precisely why he had chosen this day for his son’s school shopping. He hadn’t expected, however, to see them right there in the bookshop. The funniest part was that he nearly tripped over his son, who was standing in the aisle. “Two more weeks, and you’ll be able to look at her every day, Draco,” he said, adding a moment later, “Come, son—let’s go pick up your set of textbooks and the books for your mother while it’s still quiet here.” As they walked toward the counter, Lucius briefly let his gaze rest on both Miss Granger’s mother—the resemblance between them was striking—who was with Molly and the man conversing with Arthur. He could only assume the latter was Mr Granger. “Good afternoon, Molly,” he said with a smile, having been caught looking. “I hope this year’s shopping goes smoothly.” He then turned to Mrs Granger. “That applies to you as well.” Molly looked at him as if she thought he’d been mad. Mrs Granger smiled and said, “It’s likely to be hard to find any peace and quiet today. Molly was just telling me how popular Gilderoy Lockhart is, Lord Malfoy.” “Lucius,” he said. “The next time we meet, please just call me Lucius. I wish you both a day.” With those words, he walked on. A moment later, out of the corner of his eye, he caught a brief but heated exchange between the two women. It was cut short by something Hermione Granger’s mother said. “Interesting...” Lucius whispered to himself. “What is interesting, Father?” “I think I’m beginning to understand you, son.” At that moment, they reached the counter, where the shopkeeper appeared with a package ready for them. “Could I also ask you to wrap up the complete works of this author?” He pulled a slip of paper from his pocket and slid it across the counter toward the shopkeeper. “It’s a gift for my wife.” “Of course. Will you be staying for the author event, Lord Malfoy? I could reserve front-row seats for you.” “Unfortunately, I cannot take you up on that offer,” Lucius said—though, in truth, he had no desire to be there any longer than necessary. “I still have a few matters to attend to today. And not just those related to the upcoming school year.” A moment later, they were ready to leave. At the last second, however, he noticed Draco looking at the latest edition of ‘Hogwarts: History’. “I would like to purchase two copies of the book that has captivated my son. Please give one to me and add the other to the books Hermione Granger would buy today. I trust I can count on your discretion.” #dramione #dracomalfoy #hermionegranger #severussnape #harrypotter
