Your hand should stay relaxed and stable, resting on top of the scissors, while the movement comes through the thumb; not by opening and closing your whole hand. I get my students to do ‘scissor aerobics’ thumb in, move thumb only, thumb out, palm and repeat. It helps getting them used to handling scissors.
