@ellequii: Whilst there are, of course, varying levels of severity within different bit set-ups, when we start getting to this level of pressure, I think we need to actually look at the physics of what the bit is capable of doing. I’m seeing bits with a relatively small amount of leverage being lumped into the same category as set-ups like this, and I don’t think that’s a fair comparison. I’m seeing comment after comment labelling riders as abusive for riding in any type of gag. Whilst I agree a three ring gag needs to go in the bin that doesn’t immediately mean every single bit with a gag action should go in the bin with it. Take something like a Wilkie. Yes, it has a gag action, and that absolutely needs to be considered. But mechanically, its design limits the amount of leverage and therefore the amount of pressure it can generate compared with more extreme designs. We need to stop looking at bits purely as a list of labels, gag, leverage etc and I think people have lost the meaning of these words almost.We need to actually consider how the forces are being applied, where they’re being applied, and how much mechanical advantage the particular bit design creates Because not all bits that technically have leverage are creating the same amount of pressure! #horses #equine #equestrian #horseriding #bitchoices
