Hachiman Hikigaya is the protagonist of Oregairu, and although he initially appears to be a cynical, antisocial and emotionally detached person, his character is much deeper than that. His worldview was shaped by rejection, loneliness and painful experiences with other people, which made him believe that human relationships are often fake and that being alone is safer than getting hurt. Because of this, Hachiman convinces himself that he does not need friends and that avoiding relationships is better than depending on others. However, this is one of the biggest contradictions in his character. Hachiman constantly claims that he does not care about people, yet he pays close attention to their emotions and problems and is often willing to sacrifice himself to help them. He uses his intelligence and understanding of human nature to find solutions, but his methods are often unhealthy. Instead of communicating honestly, he frequently makes himself the villain, takes the blame, or destroys his own relationships so that everyone else can be happy. In this way, he protects others while also protecting himself from genuine emotional vulnerability. Hachiman is extremely observant and can understand the hidden motives behind people's actions, but his cynicism often makes him assume the worst about them. He sees how people form groups, hide their true feelings, adapt to others and maintain relationships through lies or social expectations. Because of this, he prefers observing society from the outside rather than becoming part of it. Yet deep down, what he truly wants is not complete isolation. He wants something genuine, something he calls the “real thing” a relationship where people can be honest with each other without pretending. This is what makes his development so important. Hachiman slowly realizes that relationships are not valuable because they are perfect, but because people are willing to be honest and vulnerable despite the possibility of getting hurt. He begins to understand that sacrificing himself is not the same as truly solving a problem and that constantly destroying himself only prevents him from forming genuine connections. Yukino Yukinoshita and Yui Yuigahama are especially important to this development. Yukino reflects many of Hachiman's own qualities: she is intelligent, independent, isolated and struggles to connect with others. Through her, Hachiman is forced to confront parts of himself. Yui, on the other hand, represents a more emotional and open approach to relationships and helps him understand that not everything can be solved through logic and analysis. The Service Club therefore becomes much more than a place where he helps people; it becomes the place where Hachiman slowly learns how to connect with others. Hachiman is not a perfect hero. He can correctly understand a problem while still choosing the wrong way to solve it. His intelligence is both his greatest strength and his greatest weakness because he uses it not only to understand others, but sometimes to justify hurting himself. His growth is therefore not about becoming a completely different person or suddenly becoming optimistic. It is about learning that he does not have to suffer alone, that he can be honest about his feelings, and that he does not have to reject people simply because they might hurt him. Ultimately, Hachiman's story is about a lonely person who believes that isolation can protect him from pain, only to discover that genuine human connection requires vulnerability, honesty and risk.
