And who would have known that when Jamaican Jonkonnu began, it was only allowed to continue because it reminded colonizers of European mummery. It wasn’t initially allowed because enslaved people got a day or two to be empowered. No. It was because plantations used to keep Jonkonnu competitions to entertain each other (and dem fren dem) and it was the slave owners who were the ones buying the costumes in the beginning. What I am grateful for however is Jonkonnu’s power to evolve, absorb and reframe. After emancipation when our ancestors had a choice with what they wanted to relate to, they started to incorporate more of our African tradition and daily Jamaica life into Jonkonnu. This eventually led to the birth of some main characters like Pitchy Patchy, Horse Head, Cow Head and King and Queen. If we were to look at the history of Jonkonnu we would realize that it consisted of many periods of highs and lulls and something deep in my bones tells me we are entering a high era. And what can we do to help usher in the new era? Talk about it. Tell the young ones stories about it. Reimagine it. So that our Tradition, So that our history and so that our Jonkonnu may never die.
