Want another reason to neuter your dog at an early age? Let’s talk about scrotal hematomas. Scrotal hematomas are an enlargement of the scrotal sac due to accumulating blood and fluid. While it may look like your dogs testicles are still there, they aren’t. Dogs over the age of 1 or two years old are significantly more at risk of developing a scrotal hematoma. While age can be a contributing factor, there are other factors that can play a role. Dogs weighing over 50 pounds are at a 50% higher risk. Dogs allowed the opportunity to mess with the incision site by licking, chewing, and generally messing with the area are at higher odds. (E-collars help prevent this! Scouts e-collar was off so he could get pictures taken.) As are dogs that have higher levels of energy that move around too much, run, jump, or roughhouse too soon after surgery - dogs like Scout. Scout is kept in a kennel, which is great for crate rest. But when he is taken out on a leash to go potty, he gets very excited. Despite our best efforts to keep him calm he will jump, twirl, and attempt to run. While there are other factors that can attribute to causing a post operative scrotal hematoma, these are the factors that you can help minimize at home. Getting your dog neutered before 1 year of age. Possible getting your dog neutered before they weigh over 50 pound. Ensuring your canine companion keeps an e-collar on when you are unable to carefully monitor them. Keeping your dog on strict crate rest for 10-14 days after being neutered, and minimizing their activity during that time period as well. And believe it or not, laying on a cold surface can exacerbate your dogs chances of getting a scrotal hematoma as well. A large blanket in their kennel can help minimize this as a contributing factor. If your furry friend develops a scrotal hematoma, please take your baby to see the vet that performed the neuter surgery. Your vet will be able to help you properly monitor the area, get your pet fit with a more appropriate length of e-collar if needed, and prescribe antibiotics or pain meds if needed. #pawportunities #spayneuter
