Officer Christopher Clawges arrived and was the first to speak with the driver of a white 2018 Ford truck. The man explained he was working when he stopped at the red light. He said a driver going the wrong way hit his truck and then kept going. After the crash, the wrong-way driver turned onto Route 130 North and parked in a lot. Officers soon found a white 2017 Jeep Compass that matched witness reports. Officer Clawges went to the parking lot and talked with the driver, identified as 23-year-old Delaney. During the talk, he noticed signs she might be impaired. She then admitted to another officer she had been drinking alcohol before driving. The officers decided to test her for impairment. Delaney was asked to do some field sobriety exercises. Officer Clawges started with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. Next was the Walk and Turn test. During that, Delaney failed to touch her heel on each step, turned the wrong way, took too many steps, and didn’t count aloud. The last test was the One Leg Stand. She didn’t lift her foot properly and put it down early. Because of the crash, her admission to drinking alcohol, and her poor performance on the tests, Officer Wolfe arrested Delaney for driving under the influence. Her car was towed and kept for 12 hours under John’s Law. Officer Clawges drove her to the police station for processing. She was read her rights and agreed to give breath samples. The tests showed her blood alcohol content was 0.20%, more than twice the legal limit of 0.08%. She was eventually released but had to face court. The officer issued her citations for DUI, reckless driving, careless driving, leaving the scene of property damage, failing to report an accident, and driving the wrong way on a one-way street.
