@zhannatarjefthealth: Imagine being prescribed testosterone by your healthcare provider… and then being told at the pharmacy, “We don’t dispense testosterone to women.” Thank you @drrachelrubin for bringing it to the FDA! This is a conversation we need to have. There is currently no FDA-approved testosterone formulation specifically indicated for women in the United States. FDA-approved testosterone products are labeled for men, so testosterone treatment in women is prescribed off-label. But “off-label” does not mean illegal, experimental, or automatically inappropriate. The FDA itself explains that healthcare professionals generally may prescribe an approved drug for an unapproved use when they determine it is medically appropriate. And we DO have clinical evidence. International guidelines support carefully dosed transdermal testosterone for appropriately evaluated postmenopausal women with hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD). When a female formulation isn’t available, guidelines describe using approximately one-tenth of a standard male dose, with monitoring to keep levels within the physiologic premenopausal female range. Yet women can still encounter barriers when they try to fill these prescriptions. And this month, the FDA itself convened an entire public workshop on testosterone use in menopausal women, acknowledging both its growing off-label use and the need for better evidence, long-term safety data, female-specific dosing research, and potential drug development. That’s the part that frustrates me. Women shouldn’t have to navigate a system where there is no FDA-approved female testosterone product, clinicians have limited female-specific formulations available, and some patients then encounter another hurdle at the pharmacy. Women deserve better research. Better education. Female-specific treatment options. And evidence-based access when treatment is appropriate. Have you ever had a pharmacy question or refuse to fill a hormone prescription written for you? 👇 #testosteroneforwomen #testosterone #menopause #perimenopause

Why do they act like women don’t have testosterone in our bodies naturally? If there’s a deficiency why can’t we have it? I’ve been on it for years and have to pay out of pocket.

Women have testosterone in their bodies and if we stop producing it we feel bad. It’s a hormone that the body makes naturally. Why can we not be prescribed this? Why is a hormone a controlled substance? Make this make sense?

It saved my life in later perimenopause. I was having lots of suicidal thoughts. I was nonfunctional. I started progesterone and testosterone and got my life back.

I had to go back to my pharmacy 4 times to finally get my prescription. The doctor had to resubmit the prescription a very specific way in order for me to get it, and use a coupon.

Testosterone has changed my life! Less brain fog, much more energy, stronger muscles, WAY less anxiety. I have a joy for life that had gone away in my 50s.

Thank you. As a trans man who needs testosterone for multitiudes of reasons not just transition: fighting for legislation to make this easier to access helps both women in need of access and trans people in need of access. Testosterone was one of the only ways my endometriosis stopped.

I'm pretty sure I'm entering Peri. My ob said she won't prescribe T unless I take it with estrogen. I cannot take estrogen (lupus). She said "well that's the only way I'll prescribe it" and she wouldn't prescribe just progesterone either unless my rheumatologist signed off on it (progesterone is safe for me)
