@ggir4g: Turhan Hatice Sultan was one of the most influential women in the Ottoman Empire during the 17th century. She was born around 1627 and became the consort of Sultan Ibrahim I. Turhan was the mother of Sultan Mehmed IV, who ascended to the throne as a child. After his accession, she received the title of Valide Sultan and became an important figure at the Ottoman court. During the early years of her son’s reign, Turhan took part in state affairs and gradually strengthened her influence. One of the most famous architectural projects associated with her was the completion of the New Mosque, or Yeni Cami, in Istanbul. Construction had originally begun under Safiye Sultan, but Turhan continued the project and completed the complex in the 1660s. A market, school, fountain, and other buildings were also constructed as part of the complex. Turhan Sultan died in 1683. She was buried in a mausoleum next to the New Mosque. She is remembered in Ottoman history as a Valide Sultan who maintained considerable influence at court and left behind an important architectural legacy.
