@indyannareads: The Great British Bake Off is my favorite show of all time. Thank goodness it’s back! Let’s just go a little easier on the bakers Week One? 🙃 #gbbo #greatbritishbakeoff #greatbritishbakingshow #netflix #tvtok
It’s a very common cake in the UK- notice how hardly anyone said they didn’t know what the cake was.

This is because of the American influence of the show to make sure they appeal to American audiences. It’s slowly becoming more like the regular cooking comp shows you see on food network. They create higher stakes and stress by making the challenges unreasonably hard or, in some cases, impossible. It’s sad to see it really trending this way.

The show unfortunately is just not as good as it once was

Fantasy: Considered :
The bakers are better. Any baker in the last 4 seasons would win any of the first 4 seasons, cause people are practicing specifically to be on the show. The technical makes sense and is a fun change.

I think coffee and walnut cake is much more common in the UK than it is in the US. So they were pretty familiar already and it would have been much easier for them to recreate than for me and you.

It’s a basic recipe and everyone knows the ratios 1:1:1:1. The challenge was how much walnut to put in.

In fairness, these aren’t beginning bakers. If they could do it in the final week, they should be able to do it in the first week. They’re not in job training.

if they are even vaguely competent bakers, they should be able to make a fairly basic sponge without a recipe and tweak it to the flavour requested (i.e. with the walnuts). it's a pretty basic baking skill that my mum taught me when I was about 8.

I mean, two series ago the first technical was recreating a battenberg from an example they were given, no method or measurements. The only difference for this series is that they removed the aspect of taste 🤔

Yes and no because a walnut cake is a basic sponge cake with walnuts swapped for flour and those ratios are pretty standard. They should’ve known the technique based on the ingredients and desired end result.

If you’re a baker you should be able to make that

For an unfamiliar recipe it would have been very difficult, but a coffee and walnut cake is really common and not particularly complicated to bake - I think this was evident by the results

i mean, tbf, the coffee and walnut cake also seems to be a really common cake over there. it’s not a 1:1 comparison, but if someone said to me “make chocolate chip cookies from scratch, and you do not get a recipe” i think i could probably pull it off, just because i’ve made it so many times.

It gets harder every season because the bakers are more prepared. I wouldn’t even bother to apply if I didn’t know how to make the basic sponges and the basic stuff like scones, pie crust, and breads

Tbh, in England. A coffee and walnut cake is EASY to make. Everyone in Britain who calls themselves a baker should know. It’s equal parts flour, sugar, butter, replacing some of the flour with walnuts, and then adding a 3-4 large table spoons of instant coffee. It’s a bog standard easy cake.

The show has been on long enough that most likely the contestants who are going on the show have studied the bakes from previous seasons. For better or for worse they’re going in at a higher skill level than earlier bakers. Though at the same time you’ve gotta wonder if this is the show trying to make “good entertainment” for viewers. I wouldn’t put it solely on Nigella.

She’s always eaten like that, and I also noticed she was chewing with her mouth open as that helps reveal more flavor nuance.

It’s an extremely common cake here. Anyone in the UK who has a passing interest in baking would have made at least one of these in their lives. I’d be really worried if the bakers couldn’t pull this off

YES, thank you. this is exactly how I felt, these are supposed to be amateurs, that's way too high a bar to set on episode one!

As an American, I didn’t like it either. Bake off is so different from our baking shows and that’s why I love it. I clocked this as an Americanized challenge right away.

As a Brit who bakes, I have never baked a coffee and walnut cake (because no one in my family but me will eat it) and i had all the ratios correct as soon as they revealed it. This cake is a staple in cafes and there’s a high chance that they’ve baked one at least once. The only thing I would’ve had a problem is the amount of espresso powder to add.
