The Giant Squid existed in the stomachs of sperm whales for centuries before anyone believed it was real — and was only photographed alive for the first time in 2004. In the Indian Ocean, repeated acoustic signals from the deep confirmed the existence of Omura's Whale for 40 years — and for 40 years not a single living individual was ever seen.
