The era when your family emigrated makes a difference too. If you’re first/second gen Gen X or Millenial, your family probably emigrated out of the abject poverty and terror of the cultural revolution. If you’re younger millenial/gen Z, they probably came from the rising entrepreneurship classes. If you’re coming now, your family is likely to be prosperous and established back home and you have more options.

I wonder if it’s really about minority to here versus this is simply how assimilation works. In other words if a white person moved to asia, likely he would marry an asian person and their baby would also assimilate further til third gen- assimilated.

Currently the first generation of Chinese have high marry and low divorce rates. It will be interesting to see the third Gen marriage and divorce rates.

Everyone was coming in a different way. Since 1980, most of Chinese coming to USA were with college degrees. They pursue high-tech industries, and their lives are pretty good. Their kids are mostly successful too, active in investment banking, AI and healthcare (doctors).

I thought more like: instead of physician and lawyer archetype, becoming open to letting kids become phDs of all subjects - literature, Asian American studies, economics, ecology, plant biology, materials science, history, etc.

I mean I’m technically fourth gen Irish and German but in reality I celebrate st Patrick’s day, eat some German foods and that about it.

I am German/Irish one of only 2 families in my larger extended family that did not marry an Italian person. Almost every cousin of mine is German/Irish/Italian. Now the next generation is marrying Latinos. We are all lapsed Catholics together. All of this creates amazing food and learning to swear in multiple languages.
