The Mikoyan MiG-31 (NATO reporting name "Foxhound") is a tandem two-seat, twin-engine, long-range supersonic interceptor aircraft developed by the Soviet Union to replace the older MiG-25 "Foxbat." Entering service in 1981, the Foxhound was specifically engineered to counter low-flying cruise missiles, strategic bombers, and reconnaissance aircraft by utilizing high speed and advanced long-range radar capabilities. Powering the massive aircraft are two Soloviev D-30F6 afterburning turbofans, which allow the MiG-31 to achieve a top speed of Mach 2.83 at high altitudes and maintain sustained supersonic flight at low altitudes. Central to its combat effectiveness is the Zaslon passive electronically scanned array (PESA) radar—the first PESA radar ever installed on a production fighter—which enables the crew to track up to ten targets simultaneously and attack four of them at ranges exceeding 100 kilometers using long-range air-to-air missiles like the R-33 (AA-9 'Amos') and R-37 (AA-13 'Arrow').
