@meredithewenson: Yearly PSA 🍁⚠️🍂 This reel went viral last year, so it’s again your friendly reminder ✋🏼 If you’re heading to the White Mountains this Fall… Follow these hiking safety tips👇🏼 ⚠️ Check @mwobs “Higher Summits Forecast” and @mountain_forecast for the specific summits you’ll be hiking. You can even text ”Weather” to MWOBS at (603) 356-2137 for an update (just make sure you have service). ⚠️ Pack the 10 Hiking Essentials: - Navigation* - Headlamp (don’t rely on iPhone light) - Sun protection - First Aid - Repair Kit (multitool or knife, duct tape, etc) - Fire (lighter and/or waterproof matches) - Shelter (lightweight ER bivvy) - Extra food - Extra Water - Extra clothing (Fleece, puffy, rain jacket, rain pants, hat, gloves, buff, extra socks. Wool or synthetic, never cotton) ⚠️ *Navigation: If using a digital map, like @alltrails, make sure it’s downloaded offline (so you don’t need WIFI or service, or drain your battery). Also have a power bank AND paper backup. Not all trailheads have maps, and trail signage can be wrong or infrequent (I’ve seen trail signs that have been spun around by the wind and pointing in the wrong direction). ⚠️ Get your @hikesafenh card — $25pp or $35/per family per calendar year. ⚠️ Bring a @garminoutdoor InReach or SOS device. ⚠️ Always be prepared to turn around if weather takes a turn. If you’re doing a big hike, have a non-negotiable turn around time. ⚠️ Keep your group together and make sure everyone has a map of the route, knows the safety plan, and knows how to use any SOS devices.
