Alexandre Family Farm is a fifth-generation dairy in Crescent City, California, with about 4,000 cows and no corporate parent. It sells its organic milk at Whole Foods as America's first humane, organic and regenerative dairy. In April 2024 Farm Forward, an animal welfare nonprofit, published whistleblower workers' videos alleging years of cow abuse, including salt poured into cows' eyes. The farm called the claims "totally false or fabricated half-truths." The USDA's organic program found "systemic failures" in November 2024. Alexandre admitted to dragging cows with hip clamps, cutting horns without pain relief, spraying cattle with diesel to repel flies, and cutting the teat off an infected cow. It admitted 30 cows died or were put down after an equipment breakdown. Inspectors found cattle without feed, some trampled to death, and cows with eye cancer sold at auction. The penalty was two years of monitoring and no fine, a "sweetheart deal" per watchdog OrganicEye. The dairy gave up its Regenerative Organic label in November 2025 and stopped showing Certified Humane by January 2026. In between, the USDA made co-owner Blake Alexandre the face of a $700 million regenerative farming program. Its site still says "We are America's first certified humane, organic, and regenerative dairy," now leaning on American Humane Certified, a weaker industry-run label. Two lawsuits are pending; the farm denies them and says it passed a 2024 inspection. Independent doesn't mean ethical.
