he could have paid the bills then saved the set amount and and then used the remainder for wants. so technically there are three options and this third option is most ideal

This is a really bad lesson and misleading. The initial question was should you pay yourself first or your bills first you baited the answer so your son could be wrong and you could correct him. but your example is flawed because the important change you make is Ryan spending on himself then saving after the bills have no effect on either

but rya just has more money in wants it has nothing to do with him paying his bills

Does paying yourself means investing into something like a high yields saving account, or rather putting money into stocks ?

You asked one question, then changed the options in the explanation. Should be Bills, savings, wants.

Yes, I agree. I pay myself 1st, that goes to my emergency fund. In order to do this though you have to have a budget. Well in my case, I don't know about anyone else. Then I share the rest across the board. I pay my bills (I already know the figure) then distribute to the sinking funds.

ANTMAN :
Paying your bills first is a responsible thing to do the reason he saved so much money throughout the year has nothing to do with the fact that he paid himself first it’s the fact that he saved $600 versus the other guy only saving 200 and then spending 1000 on just whatever he wanted

It's literally the same thing, it's just that Ryan wasn't responsible on money so spent more on wants, but if you're responsible enough you wouldn't spend that much on wants

Depends on what pay yourself first means. The definition you illustrated is not the same for everyone.

Do they both have debt? If Dre save 7200 with debts that’s 6200 he only saved 1000 frfr. You got to see the whole picture not half.
