@bbcnews: Angela Rayner stands by her criticism of plans to change permanent residency rules. Under the proposals, most migrants would have to wait 10 years to qualify for residency - instead of the current five - while foreign workers on health and social care visas would face a 15-year wait. Important to see leaders standing up and calling out these proposed changes.

PakUKVibes :

In my opinion, if the Government’s main concern is that people gaining ILR after 5 years could become a burden on public funds or housing benefits, there is a more balanced solution: keep the 5-year ILR route, but restrict access to public funds for the following 5 years after settlement. Changing the pathway from 5 to 10 years for people who are already in the UK and have planned their lives around the existing rules would be unfair and could undermine confidence in the UK’s immigration system. If the qualifying period can be changed from 5 to 10 years today, what guarantee is there that a future Government will not change it again from 10 to 15 or even 20 years? This could create a continuous cycle of uncertainty, where people can never be confident that the rules they relied upon will remain in place. The UK should maintain stability, fairness and trust in its immigration system, with appropriate transitional protection for those already on the existing pathway.

I wasn’t aware the indefinite leave to remain qualifying period was 5 years. When I applied for ILR back in the late 1990s it was 10 years
