@nyunfilter: This is a documented historical account of racial covenants and redlining in Rochester, New York. In the 1930s, the federal government graded neighborhoods across the city. Areas where Black residents lived were outlined in red. That meant no federal mortgages, no bank loans, and no investment for decades. Real estate deeds across Monroe County also included racial covenants. Legal clauses that prohibited Black people, Italian people, Polish people, and Jewish people from buying homes in certain neighborhoods. Kodak placed them on employee neighborhoods. The Catholic Diocese placed them on land. In 1957, Alice Holloway Young tried to buy a house. The bank and realtor sent her back and forth. A neighbor threatened to stone the agent who showed her a home. The KKK left a note in her mailbox. In July 1964, the city exploded. Three nights of uprising. The National Guard was called in. The Fair Housing Act made these covenants illegal in 1968. But the map was already drawn. Rochester remains one of the most segregated school districts in the nation. This is public record. Documented history. Real events. 📍 Rochester, New York / Monroe County #RochesterNY #MonroeCounty #HiddenHistory #RacialCovenants #NewYorkHistory

You can literally feel the switch when driving by. Shame on our previous leaders. Rochester as a whole however is too big to be a sundown town. That is when you have to leave a city before sunset/twilight as a black person otherwise you will end up dead. They exist but mostly in the south, and even then there are few. Maybe at one point we had on in one of the suburban areas but not now.

A map. A deed. A rule. That’s how was Rochester segregated. The signs are gone. The system isn’t. 😁

Sundown TownsDefinition: These were entire municipalities, towns, or neighborhoods that were intentionally all-White. Non-white people (most often Black Americans) were forbidden from living there or even being present after sunset.

I rented an apartment in a building on Troup St. during the late 80's. This is a Heart-Breaking revelation since I was actually 'Proud' to've called Rochester home for the time I DID live there 😲 I NEVER Knew that the >klan< was active in Rochester.💥NY💥 Nor that mr. EASTMAN was a Racist 🤬 I'm also ashamed to admit to be a (Non-practicing) 'Baptized' Roman Catholic 🤯💔
