@cunning.conquests: Pedro Álvares Cabral · Lisbon – Cape Verde – Monte Pascoal – Porto Seguro – the Cape – Kilwa – Malindi – Calicut · 9 March – 13 September 1500 In 1500, Cabral's lookouts raised land in the west after 43 days at sea. The hill they saw was named Monte Pascoal, for Easter. The fleet had left Lisbon at noon on 9 March, 13 ships and about 1,500 men, 700 of them soldiers. It was the second Portuguese fleet sent to India by sea, and the largest yet. Cabral carried orders to make a treaty at Calicut and, if refused, to use force. They watered in the Cape Verde islands on 22 March. The next day, in clear weather and calm water, the ship of Vasco de Ataíde was found to be missing with 150 men. She was never seen again. Cabral held far out to the west to pick up the winds that carry a ship round Africa, crossed the equator on 9 April, and on 22 April saw the coast of Brazil. The fleet anchored inside a reef at a place they called Porto Seguro, the safe harbour. Men went ashore and traded with the Tupiniquim for parrots and wood. Mass was said on 26 April, a wooden cross was raised on 1 May, and Cabral named the country Vera Cruz. Gaspar de Lemos was sent home with the letters, among them Pero Vaz de Caminha's account of the land. Two convicts were left on the beach and two sailors deserted. Eleven ships sailed on 3 May. On 23 May a squall struck without warning and four went down with about 380 men. One of them was commanded by Bartolomeu Dias, who had first rounded the Cape of Good Hope 12 years before. A seventh ship, under Diogo Dias, was separated and was over a year finding her way home. Six ships repaired for ten days at Sofala, failed to get a treaty at Kilwa, took on pilots at Malindi on 2 August, and anchored off Calicut on 13 September 1500. Why it matters: the landfall of 22 April 1500 brought Brazil into the Portuguese empire and is the date Brazil counts as its discovery. The Tordesillas line of 1494 had already placed that coast on Portugal's side of the world. #cabral #brazil #history #maps #onthisday

LivroNoticiasDoFront :
Legend says the Portuguese already knew about land going west, due to the stories brought by Spanish explorers. So the enormous deviation made by Cabral might have been on purpose.

An interesting detail to add to the story: Gaspar de Lemos’s ship sailed back to Portugal from Brazil, carrying Pero Vaz de Caminha’s famous letter to inform King Manuel I of these newly encountered lands, while the rest of Cabral’s expedition continued on to India. In Calicut, Caminha and more than 50 Portuguese who had come to trade were later trapped and killed during an attack on the Portuguese trading post by Muslim merchants. The survivors made it back to the ships, but between the fighting, disease, storms and shipwrecks, only a fraction of the original expedition eventually made it back to Portugal. This attack would become one of the reasons behind Vasco da Gama’s violent retaliation against Calicut when he returned to India two years later, in 1502. A lot happened after that little stop in Brazil. 🇵🇹⛵
