On May 30 2025, 18 year old Đỗ Ngọc Phương Thùy and her father were riding a motorcycle in Hanoi when they were struck by a car driven by Nguyễn Sỹ Cương, a former member of Vietnam’s National Assembly after his vehicle crossed into the opposite lane. Phương Thùy suffered catastrophic injuries including the loss of her right leg and severe internal trauma. After undergoing multiple surgeries, she passed away eight days later on June 7, 2025. As of August 2026, I have found no clear public reporting showing that he was detained, charged or prosecuted. Numerous articles and posts about the case have also reportedly been removed including posts that received removal notices following requests connected to Vietnamese authorities. Nguyễn Sỹ Cương's wife, Lâm Thị Phương Thanh, also holds a position within the Vietnamese government, raising further questions about the lack of transparency surrounding this case. People who attempted to mourn Phương Thùy by leaving flowers at Tree 55, the site of the accident in Hanoi, reportedly had their flowers removed and were prevented from leaving more. Attempts to memorialize her at the nearby Yersin statue and at another Tree 55 in Ho Chi Minh City were reportedly disrupted as well. An online memorial was eventually created where people could virtually leave flowers and prayers for her. More than a year later, people are still asking the same question: was Nguyễn Sỹ Cương ever held accountable? Please help bring awareness to Đỗ Ngọc Phương Thùy's case and keep her name from being forgotten. Rest in peace, Đỗ Ngọc Phương Thùy 🕊️ My deepest condolences to her family, friends and loved ones.
