Ashley’s dad explained that he and his wife had worked hard, built something successful, and eventually decided they didn’t want to wait until they were gone for their daughters to benefit from it. Family trips. Experiences they could all enjoy together. And while he’s explaining that, he starts to cry. You can see exactly what kind of father this man is. I see so many fathers in these cases who failed their families so spectacularly that I’ve become numb to it. And then you see a man like this. A man who worked. Provided. Loved his daughters. Loved his grandkids. Wanted to give them opportunities. Wanted to create memories while he was still here to see them. And now he’s sitting in a courtroom having to relive the murder of his daughter. That makes me furious. I am 10 toes down for Todd Smith. Because this man did what fathers are supposed to do.
