The APC party in Rivers State formally notified INEC of its planned primary election and submitted its official timetable of activities on April 20, 2026. APC Governorship Candidate for Rivers Hon Chinda's defection from PDP to APC was announced on the floor of the House of Reps by the Speaker on June 2, 2026. By April 20th 2026, The APC in Rivers had submitted its party register to INEC as the Electoral Act stipulates.Hon Chinda's name is not in the register submitted to INEC on April 20th.Remember that APC had submitted their register and Chinda's name is not there because as of April 20, he was still the minority leader of PDP in the House of Representatives. By implication,Chinda became APC candidate before he even resigned as a member of PDP which is a violation of the constitution and the section77 of Electoral Act 2026. The APC Governorship Primaries was held on Thursday May 21, 2026.So what it means is by May 21, 2026 Chinda had neither resigned his membership of PDP nor joined APC because his defection to APC was announced on June 2, 2026 almost 2 weeks after the primaries. The Supreme Court unanimously upheld the position of INEC which states that anyone whose name was not in the register According to Section (77) will not be voted for or vote in primaries.
