Now imagine hearing footsteps behind you... You turn around. Nobody's there. Welcome to Eastern State Penitentiary. 👻 Opened in 1829, Eastern State became one of the world's most famous prisons. Nearly 85,000 people passed through its cells during its long history, including notorious criminals such as Al Capone. But the ghost stories are almost as famous as the prison itself. According to Eastern State's own historical site, prisoners and officers were reporting mysterious visions and strange experiences as early as the 1940s. Visitors have reported seeing shadowy figures moving through the cellblocks. Others describe unexplained sensations, strange sounds, and the feeling that someone is watching them. And then there's Cellblock 12... Paranormal investigators filming Ghost Hunters claimed to capture what appeared to be a strange figure moving through the cellblock. The footage became one of the site's most talked-about paranormal incidents. But here's the part I find even creepier... Eastern State itself doesn't claim these stories prove the prison is haunted. Its own audio tour asks: “Is Eastern State haunted?” The answer? Nobody knows.
