My dad use to say when they first came to Abuja, it was so boring that after work on fridays they would all travel back to Lagos for the weekend and come back on Sunday evening.

This is a beautiful portrayal of Abuja’s transformation, but I think an important part of the story is missing. Describing the area as simply “the bush” before Abuja became the Federal Capital can unintentionally erase the people and communities who had lived on this land for generations. The FCT was not an empty piece of land waiting to become a capital. It was home to indigenous communities, including the Gbagyi (Gwari), who had established settlements, farms, traditions, ancestral lands and systems of community life across what is today the Federal Capital Territory.
