I spent more than 20 years as a megachurch pastor, and for most of that time I believed churches were fundamentally different from other institutions because God was behind them. I don’t see it that way anymore. Churches are still human institutions, run by human beings with all the same strengths, weaknesses, ambitions, insecurities, loyalties, blind spots, and incentives we find everywhere else. But religious institutions can add something especially powerful: God’s authority. When a CEO says, “I think we should do this,” everyone knows a human being made the decision. When a pastor says, “God is leading us to do this,” disagreement can suddenly feel like disobedience to God. I said things like that myself. I sincerely believed God was leading me. I wasn’t consciously trying to manipulate people. But sincerity doesn’t remove the power of claiming divine authority. Calling something ministry doesn’t make human dynamics disappear. And claiming God’s authority shouldn’t mean a church receives less scrutiny because it’s sacred. It should mean more. Putting God’s name on a human institution doesn’t make the people running it less human.
