He woke early each morning, exercised rigorously, and maintained a demanding academic schedule while simultaneously pursuing boxing, wrestling, and rowing as extracurricular activities, sports he embraced partly out of genuine love for physical competition and partly as a response to the frail, asthmatic constitution he had been determined to overcome since childhood. He studied natural history, German, and a wide range of subjects outside his formal coursework, and was known to carry multiple books at a time and read at a pace that astonished his classmates. Roosevelt was sociable and well-liked at Harvard, joining the Porcellian Club, which was the most exclusive social organization on campus, while also spending significant time alone in his room writing what would eventually become his first book, The Naval War of 1812, which he began during his undergraduate years.
