@sfchronicle: “The Sandpiper,” a wooden sailing ship from the 19th century, has washed up on San Francisco’s Ocean Beach, where it sits broken apart on the shore. That’s the tall tale behind Shipwreck Cove, a playground that opens Saturday as a mystery for kids to solve. The young adventurers go up a plank to inspect the mast, climb a rope ladder to the crow’s nest, and dig in the sand for sunken treasure — or maybe the skeleton of Billy Bones the pirate. The treasure hunt begins at 3 p.m. with the singing of sea shanties by a band of old salts, hoisting of a flag atop the mast, and the breaking of a piñata in the shape of a Champagne bottle. The festivities will mark with an X the only playground on the 2-mile stretch of city park that forms Sunset Dunes, the oceanfront pedestrian promenade created by the closure of the Great Highway between Lincoln Way and Sloat Boulevard during the COVID-19 pandemic, made permanent when voters approved Prop K in November 2024. The play structure, commissioned by Friends of Sunset Dunes and in planning and construction for a year, was a top priority in community surveys conducted by the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department. Under a pilot program, it will be in place for one year under a permit from the park department, though it could be extended indefinitely. It could also be dismantled and removed if a voter initiative to reopen the Great Highway to weekday automobile traffic, Prop G, passes in the Nov. 3 election. Why does the ship’s wheel have cardinal directions on it? Is it a steering wheel or a compass. Awful. Like an AI amalgamation of nautical things wrought to life by human hands with no understanding of their purpose, so divorced from the thing they are representing

Money laundering 101. A few 4x4 planks of wood and some rope isn't $800k

the voters have already spoken. It's a waste of money to keep voting for this over and over again. The park can be enjoyed by everyone. A road helps some drivers get somewhere 2-3 minutes faster
