The Incident The Disappearance: On July 23, 2026, Erasto Crisanto Valdez went spearfishing with his father near a remote cenote (natural sinkhole) close to San Francisco La Paz, on the border of Oaxaca and Veracruz. Getting Lost: Valdez chased a common snook (robalo) into a narrow, dark opening in the cenote wall. Silt reduced visibility to zero, and he became completely disoriented. Running Out of Air: Equipped with only basic gear and a small emergency air cylinder, his air ran out and he lost consciousness. The Miracle Survival The Air Pocket: When Valdez woke up, he found himself in a pitch-black, dry rock chamber more than 100 meters (300+ feet) below the surface. Sustenance: A fast-flowing underground river ran through the chamber, providing him with fresh water to drink. Loss of Time: With zero daylight or clocks, he prayed, slept, and drank water, later stating that the 15 days felt like only three. The Rescue Initial Search: His father searched initially before raising the alarm. Mexican Navy divers searched the system and recovered his harpoon at roughly 65 meters depth, but called off the active search on July 30, presuming him dead. International Team: Local authorities then brought in an international cave-exploring team. Found Alive: On August 7—15 days after he vanished—American cave diving instructor Harry Gust and Mexican diver Rosalino "Rosso" Rivera navigated the perilous, unmapped tunnels and heard Valdez calling out from the dark. He was rescued and treated in the hospital for severe dehydration and malnutrition.
