Wow! I’m almost 50 and really struggling with this- I wasn’t raised my mother or father however my mother has been a drug addict her entire life and because of those choices I suffered abuse in foster care, and through out my life. She has cancer now and nearing the end of her life. It’s SO hard to forgive and try to be there for her, when she was and never will be there for me or ever be the mother I so badly needed. It’s very painful. I long for her to understand what her choices did to me, sadly she’s severely mentally ill and not capable of what I need from her.

I’m able to let go of what I cannot change but what I can’t get over is the conditional love today I’m still trapped with. I can forgive what has been done to me but if I do something that doesn’t align with their standards it’s unforgivable. That still doesn’t make sense to me [Red heart]

I accepted and forgave my mother. I had to move on from her mistakes as a parent. My mistakes I have made were mine and never blamed her for them. She’s been gone since 1989. I still love her. I am 57 now.
