His character is built around the idea of being given a second chance at life. Before becoming Rudeus, he lived a deeply isolated and unsuccessful life in his previous world. After dying, he is reincarnated into a fantasy world with his memories intact, giving him the opportunity to approach life differently. However, his reincarnation does not magically make him a better person. Instead, Rudeus has to gradually develop through his experiences, mistakes, relationships, and consequences. One of the most important aspects of Rudeus is that his previous memories influence his psychology. Although he is physically reborn as a baby, he retains memories and experiences from his previous existence. This creates a strange situation where his body develops from infancy while his mind retains knowledge from another life. His personality therefore cannot simply be described as that of an ordinary child. At the same time, he is not literally the same person he was before. His new life gives him experiences that his previous life never did, and these experiences gradually reshape his personality. This distinction is important because Rudeus' character development comes from the interaction between his past and his new life rather than from his previous personality remaining completely unchanged. Rudeus' greatest strength is his willingness to learn. In his previous life, he became trapped in isolation and stopped progressing as a person. His reincarnation gives him motivation to actually participate in the world around him. He studies magic, learns swordsmanship, travels, forms friendships, and eventually takes responsibility for people other than himself. His intelligence also allows him to adapt quickly to situations that would overwhelm an ordinary child. However, his intelligence does not make him emotionally mature. Throughout the story, Rudeus repeatedly demonstrates that knowledge and maturity are not the same thing. His flaws are therefore essential to understanding him. Rudeus begins his new life carrying many of the psychological problems created by his previous existence. He can be selfish, cowardly, socially awkward, and excessively focused on his own desires. Some of his behaviour toward other characters is deliberately uncomfortable and morally questionable. The story does not require the audience to pretend that these actions are acceptable. Instead, they form part of the conflict within his character. Rudeus is someone who has genuine potential for improvement while still possessing serious flaws. His relationships are one of the main mechanisms through which he develops. Characters such as Roxy, Eris, Sylphiette, Ruijerd, and later his family provide experiences that challenge his existing worldview. Roxy in particular becomes an important influence because she demonstrates that someone can overcome fear and limitations through effort.
