My grandpa is a old transmission man, he had this same issue one time. He couldnt find a single real problem with the internals, so he tried swapping the case. He took all the guts out of the old and put it in the new case and it worked like a dream. Best he could figure is that there was some crack or warp that he couldnt find that was allowing fluid to bypass just enough to keep it from shifting.

Had a comeback with this exact problem a few years ago. Bench build, customer install. Customer bought a performance converter that had the wrong splines. We're you able to check engagement between input shaft and converter?

They put the later model torque converter with the bigger splines in an early model. Hence why the pump didn’t turn and you are seeing assembly grease in the unit.
