Police officers need more bodily protection. I'm sure there is some kind of stab resistant, light weight material out there that can be worn to help aid in protecting against this. Unless we crack down and turn dystopian, this new knife-ready culture is going to have to be managed as a risk and a hazard; remember the hierarchy of controls ESIEAP. Also, knife attacks to the neck must be viewed as attempted murder, and need to be dealt with heavily. The tolerance for this needs to be next to 0, handing out life sentences. If someone is going to take a life, they surely must forfeit their right to freedom for the duration of an actual life time - whatever the current median lifespan is. We live in a civil, Western world who's culture is turning sour. We need stronger and sharper laws to persuade people against this behaviour, because if they're going to do this to a police officer, they will do this to anyone else who looks at them the wrong way.
