@getdivorceready: Monthly alimony sounds safe until he loses his job, stops paying, moves states, or decides to go back to court to lower it. Then you're paying an attorney to chase money that was supposed to be yours. A lump sum ends all of that. It's paid once and it's yours. No waiting on a check, no enforcement battles, and no staying financially tied to your ex for years. The catch is that the number has to be fair. A lump sum should reflect what the monthly payments are actually worth, and where it comes from matters. $200K from a 401(k) is not the same as $200K in cash, because taxes can take a big bite. Before you sign, have a CDFA run the numbers. +371 women have trusted Get Divorce Ready to do exactly that. #divorce #alimony #divorcetips #divorcedwomen #CDFA

Yes 🙌 I took the lump sum and Invested it! The S&P return is on average 10%. He had already been fired from two executive level positions - I was not risking it.

100% do this! I ended up taking one of our properties to eliminate spousal support. He wasn’t paying on time and I had to take him back to court several times and honestly family court. Never did anything they didn’t care. Yes, my Spousal Support was high but once I did the math on the property and the fact he wasn’t paying and family court did nothing I was better off with the property. See what you have and negotiate.

But that lump sum should be less than the total of monthly payments…. Based on cost of funds

If we were still married her income would be affected by me losing my job so why not after? She can work and live within her own means.
