Finding a parent who can listen and take feedback is shocking in that generation...

Wow your MIL heard you and then actually changed her behavior..?! I express a boundary and just get told how I’m the problem.

That is wonderful. My mother in law stopped by like that before and came in empty handed and said wow it looks like a bomb went off in here, let me take my grandson for awhile so you can get this place cleaned up….he was 6 months old and I worked from home. Then every time I would see her she would ask are you keeping up with your house or do I need to take my baby away again? 😳

I was a few weeks pp & my MIL came over with a pan of chicken tetrazzini & swept the whole bottom floor to our house and omg I felt so bad. I kept apologizing and telling her she didn’t have to but she really insisted 🥹

We don’t care what your house looks like or what you’re wearing. We just love all of you and most of us know what it was like having zero support and we want better for you.

I love that your husband took ownership and talked to his mom and didnt instead make you into the bad guy

I'm glad she was able to handle the feedback and adjust. and I love that it didn't slow her affection down at all. that's how you know someone actually cares. I helped my brother's girlfriend do some chores and build furniture that he hadnt gotten to in almost the year since he'd moved. it was a lovely day with her, but I told her I wanted to be gone before he got home from work. he comes home tired and he goes through a shame phase when someone does something for him like I'd done. I didn't want to surprise him with social requirements or make him put on a gratitude mask... I just wanted to help his girlfriend do some stuff for him for his bday. she started crying when I told her that I thought about it like that.

I have asked for a call or text from my in-laws before they come for years and they don’t listen. Not that they were even coming to do something nice anyway. 😭

That right there is the definition of respect! What a loving MIL. She took your simple request and loved you even harder.

mine had stopped by multiple times (some announced, some not) and every time i tried to apologize for the mess. she appeared as understanding and i want to think she was over there genuinely because she cares about us. however, i’ve heard the way she talked badly about our house to her other children🥲 now if she ever shows up, im frantically running around my house trying to make it spotless😩

My man once questioned why I got so upset when his friends would just pop in. They did that before I moved in, why can't they now? I told him before, when he was a bachelor, they expected the house to be messy. But now, when a woman and two kids live there, they will judge ME not him, if the house isn't in order, because society has decided it is my job to keep the house clean and, even with kids, if I fall down on the job, they will judge me for not keeping the house in proper order. Even though they are lovely and kind, the idea of that quiet judgement stresses me out. He doesn't really get it, but people don't pop in anymore.

You are so lucky to have a mil who heard you, wasn’t offended, and respected the boundary because she knew the most important thing was her relationship to you and her son. ❤️

my mom came over one day while we were all sick with Rsv to bring groceries and meds. i was so humiliated by the state of my house but she came over with a mask and gloves and helped clean up for me

I love that there are boundaries set and kept!! On both sides. I only show up unannounced when there is an emergency. Even with (grown) babies that emerged from a dwelling within me. No way would I show up to anyone else’s house.

Love that! That you said what bothered you, he listened (and hopefully understood and agreed with you), talked to his mom and you mil respected it.

This is amazing. My MIL decided to pack up and move 2 states away to start her life over cause boundaries was too much for her 😅

That’s so beautiful. I can’t fathom a world where expressing a boundary led to changed behavior instead of me becoming the villain 🥺

You have a great mom in law. I also think you handled your “issue” with her correctly. I understand a cluttered house causes anxiety in some. I’m cool with it but my wife gets anxious over it. So I’ll clean everyday to ease that. Kudos to your husband for having your back and taking care of it with his mom.

Just so you know, you’ve hit the MIL lottery. Mine has stopped by unannounced (and a few times even after being told we were busy) and has never once brought anything 😅. I asked her to simply send me a heads up and that was the beginning of the end to our relationship 🥴.
