Nightcrawler, a film loaded with intense behind-the-scenes facts. Gyllenhaal stars as Lou Bloom, a deeply disturbing, amoral freelance crime journalist in Los Angeles. 📈 Production and Behind-the-Scenes FactsThe Coyote Inspiration: Gyllenhaal envisioned his character as a starving coyote. He dropped nearly 30 pounds to get a gaunt, hollowed-out look. He survived mainly on kale salad and chewing gum. Extreme Commuting: To maintain his lean physique and manic, exhausted mindset, Gyllenhaal frequently ran 15 miles from his home directly to the film set each day. Improvised Injury: During the scene where Lou screams into a mirror, Gyllenhaal grew so intensely immersed that he unexpectedly smashed the glass. He severely sliced his hand and required 46 stitches at the hospital. He was back on set just six hours later, forcing him to hide his bandaged hand behind his back in subsequent scenes. Real Paparazzi Ride-Alongs: To prepare for their roles, Gyllenhaal and co-star Riz Ahmed spent nights riding along with real-life

Real Paparazzi Ride-Alongs: To prepare for their roles, Gyllenhaal and co-star Riz Ahmed spent nights riding along with real-life "nightcrawlers" (nocturnal ambulance-chasers) tracking live police scanners through LA. Family Ties: The film's Academy Award-winning cinematographer, Robert Elswit, happens to be Gyllenhaal's real-life godfather. It was purely a coincidence, as director Dan Gilroy had independently sought him out for the project. Blistering Pace: Despite the movie's polished look, it was a hyper-fast indie shoot. The crew filmed across 80 different locations in just 28 days.
