@cinemaoccupy: Arrival (2016) Dir: Denis Villeneuve | DP: Bradford Young The scenes of Amy Adams with her daughter that open Arrival look like flashbacks. They are flash forwards. Villeneuve built the film as a linguistic puzzle, the Sapir Whorf hypothesis made visual, in which learning a language that does not run in a straight line rearranges how a person experiences time. He shot Adams knowing the reveal, so her early grief plays as present tense confusion. The film is adapted from Ted Chiang's short story Story of Your Life. Bradford Young's desaturated, fog heavy images keep the audience unsure of what it is looking at. It cost $47 million, took $203 million, and won the Oscar for Sound Editing. Amy Adams, the heavy favorite going in, was not nominated for Best Actress, one of the biggest snubs of the decade. mari :
i always say this but arrival had THE best depiction of aliens i’ve ever come across. it makes so much sense that they wouldn’t be bound by space and time the same way we are.

To anyone who still don't understand the movie, she basically became like dr Manhattan in watchmen. She experiences non linear time which means she lives in the past, present and future simultaneously.

Omg… I JUST realized that the movie’s title isn’t just about the aliens, but the arrival of her daughter… who she knows will die.

This movie doesn’t get enough flowers, such a beautiful way of representing how non-linear feelings are.

I think a good representation for the message of this movie is having a dog (or any pet really). We do it knowing that while they will be one is our life's great loves, they will also be one of greatest sorrows, yet we do it anyways. We face it with anticipation but also fear, for we know their end will come before ours. The world couldn't change me the way losing a little life that I cared for so strongly did.

My favourite movie ever. It’s impossible not to cry with this scene, the music, the acting, the script, it’s just perfect. “Baby come back to me” always breaks me 😢
