I help with a literacy programme at the local library. I see two kinds. One is functional - people need help filling in forms because there are certain words they don't know, or perhaps they can read but not really write. The other is comprehension- they know the words, but can't grasp what's really being asked. For example "what savings do you have, if any" on a form for a means test is asking for an amount of cash that you can access. Not that Mary owes you €50 and you've got €10 in grocery vouchers. Lack of comprehension ties the second kind of person in knots as they're afraid of getting things wrong, and start overcomplicating things.

Your description of functional illiteracy helped me understand a frequent problem I have in the workplace. I write technical analyses and functional requirements and often discover that the stakeholders can’t read for understanding. Vocab is fine. Sentence to sentence is OK. But they often miss the point. I think it’s also why they think AI writing is great. It has margins, bullet points, and charts. They can read it but don’t realize it’s not cohesive.

sooooo many people miss apply the literacy crisis to examples that are not part of the literacy crisis. It's ironic too because they don't realize that they don't understand the literacy crisis and cannot spot proper examples.

A few powerful people benefit from this crisis. In the end, literacy is about access, and access is about wealth. We do not want to face the literacy crisis because we would have the face the economic disparity in this country.

People conflating the women/woman pronunciation debacle with the literacy crisis peeves me to no end. Especially when they start blaming incels or anti-feminists for the dialect change. It’s also interesting how people only use women in their examples of the phenomenon, as if that isn’t misogynistic itself

I don’t know. I feel like in the modern social media era everything is doomed to semantic expansion and become buzzwords. It’s annoying but you see it with pretty every phrase or word that somehow goes viral over the internet.

thank you. I care really deeply about functional illiteracy and people have decided that being a grammar nerd means you're morally superior and that those with different dialects than you are the "literacy crisis." I've had first-hand experience with the educational system and how it is broken (not blaming teahchers; it's a system that a broken) and it's not people saying "whenever" instead of "when."

I was talking to a friend about this a couple of weeks ago, and I came to the conclusion that information or knowledge had value, like you had to watch the news to see the weather tomorrow or buy a newspaper, at which point you tried to read it to get your money’s worth. For example, my love of reading and a significant amount of my comprehension came from reading the sports section of newspapers and seeking out the storylines as the Yankees went to the playoffs from 1996–2003.

The most frustrating thing I deal with on a daily basis is people’s refusal to actually read the email with the answers to the questions that THEY ASKED. But, as tempting as it is to blame it on the literacy crisis, I know it’s a time management and/or priorities issue. It would probably be less frustrating to me if they couldn’t read than the reality (which is that they can read but are choosing not to).
