Down Memory Lane 🔵❤️ A letter from Najjera ✍🏾 Saturday, 26th September, 2026 When the Limousines Became Memories: A Quiet Lesson from Mutundwe Sometimes, an ordinary journey takes us down memory lane and reminds us of the things we once celebrated, the things we fought to own, and the truth that nothing lasts forever. The other day, I accompanied a lady friend who had gone to visit her children at a boarding school somewhere in Mutundwe, one of Kampala’s suburban areas. It was an ordinary journey, or so I thought. But somewhere along the way, I caught a rare glimpse of something that instantly transported me back to another era—an era when life seemed simpler, slower and, in many ways, more enjoyable. There, in an open compound, stood several elegant and once-impressive limousines. They were beautiful, even in their present state. But time had not been kind to them. They looked weather-beaten, tired and forgotten, as though they had been sitting there for years, quietly surrendering to the elements. Their once-polished bodies were now worn, and nature seemed to be slowly reclaiming these magnificent machines. I stopped my jalopy and stared at them for quite some time. And as I looked, memories came flooding back. Those of you who are old enough will remember that these cars were once the talk of town in Kampala, particularly in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Back then, seeing a limousine on the streets was an event in itself. Wedding planners would hire them for exquisite weddings, and arriving at your wedding in one of these magnificent machines was a statement. A man who got married in those days and could afford to hire such a limousine was certainly not your ordinary fellow. These were the cars of the A-listers, the well-to-do, the people who had made it. For a young couple, having one of these beauties waiting outside the wedding venue added a certain magic to the occasion. They represented class, success, sophistication and, perhaps most importantly, dreams. I remember seeing some of them parked at the parking space of Serena Hotel, opposite the Conference Centre. They were once part of Kampala’s glamorous social scene, hired for weddings, corporate functions and other grand occasions. But somewhere along the way, times changed. The bookings apparently dwindled. The once-coveted limousines became less fashionable, perhaps even an eyesore at such a prestigious five-star hotel. Eventually, I imagine, someone decided that something had to be done with them. And somehow, they ended up here—in Mutundwe. Forgotten. Unwanted. Waiting quietly for a fate that perhaps nobody remembers anymore. As I stood there looking at them, I found myself asking questions that had very little to do with cars. What is life? What exactly is this material wealth we spend our entire lives fighting so hard to acquire? We chase houses, cars, titles, money, influence and possessions. We compete with one another. We sometimes lose friendships and relationships in pursuit of things that we believe will make us important. And then one day, time moves on. The things we once considered priceless become ordinary. The things we once desperately wanted become outdated. The things that once made people stop and admire us can eventually find themselves abandoned in an open compound, exposed to rain, dust and the unforgiving passage of time. Looking at those limousines, I could not help but think of the old saying: That all is Vanity!
