Napoleon Bonaparte was born on August 15, 1769 in Ajaccio, on the island of, shortly after France incorporated the island into its territory. He belonged to a family of the smalln nobility. From a young age he showed interest in a military career and was sent to France to study. He entered a military school and became an officer. When the French Revolution began in 1789, Napoleon was twenty years old and took advantage of the enormous political changes to advance rapidly in the army. In 1793 he excelled during the of Toulon, where he helped drive out the British and Royalist forces, and was promoted to general at only 24 years of age. During the following years he gained more and more importance. In 1795 he helped the revolutionary government defeat a in Paris and, in 1796, he received command of the French army in Italy. There he won a series of impressive victories against Austria and its allies, conquering territories and forcing Austria to negotiate peace. His fame grew enormously and he returned to France as a hero. In 1798 he led an expedition to Egypt with the intention of reorganizing British trade routes to India. Although he won some land victories, the French fleet was destroyed by the British at the Battle of the Nile, leaving his army isolated. Napoleon left Egypt in 1799 and returned to France. That same year he participated in the coup d'état of 18 Brumario, which ended with the government of the Directory. Napoleon became First Consul, more and more power in his hands. Over the next few years he reorganized France, created the Civil Code, known as the Napoleonic Code, reformed the administration, strengthened education and reached an agreement with the Catholic Church through the Concordat of 1801. In 1804, after consolidating his power, Napoleon proclaimed himself Emperor of the French. On December 2, 1804, he was crowned emperor at Notre Dame de Paris, in a ceremony in which, according to tradition, he took the crown and crowned himself. As emperor, he built one of the most powerful empires in Europe. He defeated Austria, Prussia and others.
