This is one of the last videos I filmed of the Lahontan wild horses before the helicopters came. Raw video..no edit.. See how closely bonded they were—always aware of one another, moving together and protecting their young. They were very wild, incredibly beautiful and completely at home on the land they knew. But there is more to the story of this herd than the public was told. The Lahontan Herd Management Area had already been reduced to a small and fragmented piece of habitat. The broader landscape surrounding it includes Department of Defense lands withdrawn for military use and testing by the Navy. Livestock grazing is also authorized within the HMA, yet the horses were assigned an Appropriate Management Level of only 7–10. BLM also permitted off-road racing through the larger area used by these horses during foaling season, when newborn foals and pregnant or nursing mares are especially vulnerable to disturbance. Somehow, these competing uses were allowed to continue, while the horses were blamed for being outside the lines of an HMA that never reflected the full landscape they depended upon. In July, BLM gathered and removed 703 wild horses from the Lahontan area. Their family bands were broken apart, and the horses were transported to holding to be processed for adoption or sale. Their futures are now uncertain. This video preserves how I want people to remember them—not behind bars, wearing numbered tags, but wild and free, surrounded by the families they trusted. I am grateful I was able to witness and document them before everything changed. I only wish the public had been given the opportunity to demand that all uses of this land—not only the horses—be honestly examined before this beautiful herd was taken away.
