@vocabulary.hub3: ⭐ The most important rule: If I were... For hypothetical situations, especially in formal/standard English, use were with I, he, she, it, not was. Subject Standard hypothetical form I If I were He If he were She If she were It If it were We If we were They If they were Very useful examples: ❌ If I was you, I would apologize. ✅ If I were you, I would apologize. ❌ If she was here, she would help us. ✅ If she were here, she would help us. ❌ If he was the manager, he would change the policy. ✅ If he were the manager, he would change the policy. “If I were you” is especially common and important. 🔥 Compare these carefully If he was at home, he probably saw the message. Meaning: مجھے یقین نہیں، لیکن ممکن ہے کہ وہ گھر پر تھا۔ ➡️ Real possibility about the past. If he were at home, he would answer the phone. Meaning: وہ گھر پر نہیں ہے / ایسا فرض کیا جا رہا ہے؛ اگر ہوتا تو فون اٹھاتا۔ ➡️ Hypothetical/unreal situation. Another powerful comparison If I was rude, I'm sorry. = Maybe I was rude; I'm acknowledging a possible past fact. اگر میں بدتمیزی کر گیا تھا تو مجھے افسوس ہے۔ If I were rude to everyone, nobody would like me. = I'm imagining a situation in which I am rude to everyone. اگر میں سب کے ساتھ بدتمیزی کرتا، تو کوئی مجھے پسند نہ کرتا۔ ⚠️ One important correction to the image The image's explanation “If it was = real/past possibility” and “If it were = imaginary/unreal situation” is useful, but it is not a complete rule. In modern informal English, you may sometimes hear: If I was wrong, I'm sorry. This is common when the speaker means “If it is true that I was wrong…” But for a clearly hypothetical situation, particularly in formal English, use: If I were wrong, I would admit it. So remember this simple distinction: 🟢 WAS → possible/actual past If it was true, we made the right decision. 🔵 WERE → hypothetical/unreal If it were true, we would be surprised. ⭐ Special expression If I were you, I would... = اگر میں تمہاری جگہ ہوتا تو... This is one of the most important uses of were in English.
