@coachmontessori: “But my child is going to cry.” I hear this all the time when I explain how to hold a boundary or move through a situation a child doesn’t like. And my answer is: it’s okay to cry. Our job as parents is not to make sure our children never cry, never feel frustrated, bored, disappointed, or uncomfortable. Our job is to be there while they experience those feelings. If my child doesn’t want to spend another 15 minutes in the car, I can acknowledge that. I can offer my hand. I can be available. But I don’t need to desperately search for something that will make the crying stop. Crying is not a problem that always needs to be solved. Children will experience boredom, frustration, disappointment, sadness, and discomfort throughout their lives. We don’t need to remove every uncomfortable feeling the moment it appears. Sometimes there is nothing to fix. Sometimes they simply don’t like what’s happening. “Yeah, sometimes being in the car gets boring. We have 15 more minutes. If you want my hand, I’m here.” And if you try to talk to them and they only scream or cry even more, simply say: “Okay.” It’s not the moment to explain. You can talk about it later, when they’re ready to listen. You don’t have to stop the emotion.
