In Your Friends & Neighbors, the main character tries to sell a Rolex for $185,000. He knows how to negotiate in his world as a stockbroker, but luxury watches are a completely different market, and the buyer quickly realizes that. She takes control of the negotiation by making it clear that he doesn't really understand the value, demand, or resale market for the watch. Instead of being in a position to negotiate, he's the one who needs the deal, and she uses that leverage against him. By the end, the Rolex he expected to sell for $185,000 goes for only $65,000. The lesson is bigger than watches. Being successful in one market doesn't automatically make you an expert in another. If you don't understand the product, the market, or the person sitting across from you, you're giving them the advantage before the negotiation even starts. Know what you're selling, know what it's worth, and most importantly, know what you're talking about.
