As an LEO, I’m proud of my brother for the decisive win. What I’m disappointed in is seeing the media continue to describe his opponent as nothing more than a criminal and a felon. The guy is a freaking UFC fighter who has worked to turn his life around. At what point do we stop defining people solely by their past and recognize what they’ve done to move beyond it? I’m glad Hernandez showed more class than the media by recognizing him as a father and expressing that he wants to see him do well. That kind of acknowledgment shows compassion and recognizes that people are more than the worst thing they’ve ever done. Constantly attaching the worst label from someone’s past to everything they accomplish doesn’t help rehabilitation—it can hold people back. People should be accountable for what they’ve done, but they should also be allowed to grow beyond it.
