@cedgehog: It feels like on social media there’s a need to outsmart the media we consume, which ultimately undermines the stories being told, and I can’t think of a better example of this than The Last of Us. #tv #gaming

It’s really annoying to when the cure obviously was meant to have worked like even the writers said it would have worked

I think the example you gave actually leads to a perfect counter point. If the writers genuinely wanted there to be a moral ambiguity, they should've been smart enough to write that ambiguity to be unavoidable. Write the doctors to be qualified (actual brain surgeons instead of just "a doctor"), make the death of Ellie from the surgery a possibility instead of a guarantee (no surgery IRL has a perfect success rate), etc. But because the writers failed to account for that, they left room for the interpretation that the cure was false. That's not on the audience for being "too smart", it's on the writers for not being "smart enough".

I’d like to point out that the fireflies had no idea if they’d be able to get a cure and were just going off of vibes. But the sequel and future ports/remakes of the first game retconned it

I understand where you’re coming from, but like “using the brain to create a vaccine” is crazy. You don’t kill the thing you are using to create the vaccine from. You’d want her immune system, DNA, and blood samples. The brain makes no sense.

dampen away. the story and gameplay are incredibly mid. the only reason this game is so popular is because it was the first to be treated with respect by the media for having realistic graphics. other media, hell other games, tell similar storys with harder hitting resolutions.

the whole point of both games is that the final decisions the characters make are the wrong ones, joel should have let them make the cure even if it meant ellie dies, ellie shouldn't have chosen revenge because joel would have wanted her to have a happy life with dina and Abby chose revenge and lost everyone she had left. the endings are supposed to make you feel sad.

You're not wrong that people are creating loopholes to avoid uncomfortable dilemmas, but "the vaccine had to work because the story needed it to work" is lame writing to begin with.

Whether the cure would have worked or not doesn’t matter in the slightest anyway. Joel didn’t know whether it would have worked, he didn’t even know whether they talked to her about it before he woke up. He simply knew she was gonna die in the procedure, so he decided to kill them before they could.

It's like people trying to find loopholes to thought experiments. The core of the argument is not in some secret detail; what the story/experiment is giving you is what you are supposed to receive.

never played the game but this sounds like what happened in the maze runner. they need to dissect the brain of the immune for a chance to make a cure

I think it's important to acknowledge that neither the fireflies nor Joel took Ellie's autonomy into account. They were both equally selfish reasons. Ellie didn't make an informed decision because they didn't tell her she would die because they didn't want to give her the choice of saying no. Joel completely disregarded Ellie's decision to sacrifice herself.

I genuinely think the reason TLOU2 was so unpopular (aside from people’s bigotry) was because everyone refused to grapple with the ethical dilemma the first time. So when it came back in the second game, people felt slighted.

no, you are the one who has fundamentally misunderstood the issue. the fact that a cure wasn't guaranteed is a massive part of the dilemma. if a cure was guaranteed, there wouldn't be any real debate

I blame Cinema Sins and unfortunately also Game Theory. People have been conditioned into viewing media as something to pick apart and dissect rather than as art meant to convey something to the audience. Suspension of disbelief is completely gone

yup the main issue is that they were assholes about it they didn't have informed consent from ellie and they didn't let ellie and Joel say goodbye. even people in the death row get last meal and last rites stuff but they couldn't do it for a girl that was gonna sacrifice herself for all humanity?
