@shapedbyus1: THE WRONG ANSWER The Choice to Be Here, Connection, series 6, post 3 of 4 Recently, a viral video made the rounds — a young man saying we're not meant to live like this. That our modern environment alienates us from community, from nature, from meaningful work. It resonated with millions. He's right. Something is wrong. But the answer isn't what he thinks. I've lived on the land. I've lived in community. I've done the return-to-nature thing. I saw that the answer doesn't lie there either. I see the same emptiness in my own children. They find more connection in a story on a screen than in their direct environment. For them, a story someone else made has more vibrancy than nature — while I can still remember when nature had that vibrancy. They'd want to feel more connected to the world, but they feel it's one-sided. They reach out, and it lands in emptiness. And I don't feel that vibrancy in nature myself anymore either. So I can't show them what I no longer have access to. I feel sad they didn't get my youth — roaming outside, swimming in the dirty duck pond, climbing trees while making up a story about a bear that could climb too. I was really present in those moments. Even if I can't reach that feeling now, I still know how it felt in my body. The answer lies somewhere else entirely. Something much smaller.
