The first major civilisation around the Mekong Delta was called the 'Funan' mandala kingdom, and it was a lot more advanced than you might think. What happened to Funan? Eventually, power shifted inwards to the Chenla Kingdom across the course of the 6th-8th century CE through battles and general cultural change. Chenla is what becomes the Khmer Empire, and by the 12th century, the Angkor Wat we know.
