![The falsehood of the Murji'ah. Isḥāq ibn Rāhawayh said: “The Murjiʾah went to extremes to the point that a group among them began saying: 'Whoever abandons the prescribed prayers, fasting Ramadan, Zakat, Hajj, and obligations in general—without denying them—we do not declare him a disbeliever; his matter is deferred to Allah thereafter, since he acknowledges them.' These are the Murjiʾah about whom there is no doubt.” Masāʾil al-Imām Aḥmad wa-Isḥāq ibn Rāhawayh by Ḥarb al-Kirmānī (p. 377); cited by Ibn Rajab in Fatḥ al-Bārī (1/25). Ibn Baṭṭah al-ʿUkbarī said: “Whoever claims that he affirms the obligatory duties yet does not perform them despite knowing them, and affirms the prohibition of immoralities and abominations yet is not deterred by them nor abandons them, while maintaining that he is nevertheless a believer—he has rejected the Book and that which His Messenger brought. His likeness is that of the hypocrites who {say with their mouths, 'We believe,' while their hearts do not believe} [Al-Māʾidah: 41]. Allah declared them to be liars, rejected their claim, named them hypocrites, and assigned their abode to the lowest depth of the Fire. Moreover, the hypocrites are in a better condition than the Murjiʾah; because the hypocrites denied action [inwardly] yet performed it [outwardly], whereas the Murjiʾah affirmed action with their words yet denied it by abandoning its practice. Thus, whoever denies something [inwardly] while affirming it with his tongue and acting upon it with his body is in a better condition than one who affirms it with his tongue but refuses to act upon it with his body.
