have you thought of perhaps...buying regular opal... and doing different colored water to see what color they turn? 👀

I'm a jeweler and if you knew WHY the opal turns that color you'd change your mind. people would return rings to me to swap their ruined opals out and they were this color of orange/yellow due to the opal soaking up ALL liquids they come in contact with. people would wear their opals while giving body massages, engaging in sex acts, making fried chicken, etc. the opals soak all this up and turn these colors. it's really disgusting.

It’s funny, I also like a lot of “low grade” stones. Lavender colored amythests are dirt cheap since that deep purple is the “standard”, same with the more light purple tanzanites! My absolute favorite stone that I own is a “low grade” Oregon sunstone because it’s a very peachy color with a big Schiller line in it, but it’s sooo pretty to me

I want everyone to take this video in and appreciate it. This clearly shows that something considered ruined is still loved by someone so dearly. It’s all about prospective. This is a very pretty version of the stone. I don’t think it’s ruined either

Soaking them in 100% acetone will remove a lot of that build up also. I love that you like what you like, but if anyone’s had this happen to their Hydrophane opals, that’s how I fix them when I get them in the shop

I love opals too! From what I know this happens a lot with Ethiopian opals because they’re hydrophane and absorb water so lose luster. This is mine, she’s my favorite opal and got lost in a move. Found recently and it’s broken but still beautiful.

geology student w silversmithing as a hobby here, the variety of opal thats porous and changes appearance when it absorbs water is called hydrophane so that might help with your search. also, bc the conditioners where theyre formed affect their characteristics, opals from different localities have common traits so ethiopian opals are usually hydrophane opals and look like whats in most of your images. they're more affordable than more stable opals that aren't as porous as theyre seen as less desirable which is a win for your purposes! you might have some luck at pawn shops/thrift stores/etc looking for some. also bc it seems like you like that they kinda capture history and moments in a way just wanted to throw out the suggestion of getting a "new" hydrophane one as well and then letting it change as you go through life, it would kinda record your own life in that way then and could be fun

My husband thrifted me a milk opal (basically just an opal with little to no flash) and Ruby pendant and I adore it! Low grade stones are so fun sometimes. Personally I love a rainbow moonstone with lots of black inclusions.

I have a few Opal pieces, and I did not know this could happen! It makes me upset that the jeweler never told me about their care, etc. Especially cause they were expensive and big

Hey! Jeweler here (not GSI certified but I’ve seen plenty of opals) this happens from being in the sun and having water and chemicals run over them over time! Opals absorb water, so a jewelry cleaner will discolor them. Sun damage makes them look quite yellow, and almost golden! Heat also damages them, but I can’t remember if it is color related or if it creates cracks and fractures!

they're so cool! like glamorous river water. if it were me, i would find the business email someone who made one of these pieces and take a shot asking them about their supplier!

my ex sister in law had a moonstone wedding ring and it was absolutely gorgeous but yeah, delicate. I saw her wearing her silicone gym ring like 70% of the time unless she was getting dressed up for something
